Are You Swimming Safely?

Jun 13 2018

Summer is here and we’re sure you can’t wait for a nice swim! Swimming is a great way for the whole family to have fun & get active this summer. Though, are you swimming safely?

Unfortunately, drowning is too common in California. The Orange County Fire Authority and the Orange County Health Care Agency have launched their 2018 drowning prevention campaigns: “Never Swim Alone” and “Always Watch Your Children Around Water.” These campaigns will continue to run through October and represent these organizations’ strong efforts to promote safe swimming. There are many “layers of protection” you can follow to prevent drowning:

·         Make sure an adult is watching anytime children are near or in the water.

·         Stay within arm’s length of your young child, providing “touch supervision” at all times.

·         Use life jackets, not floating toys.

·         Watch out for rip currents that might pull you away from the shore.

·         Swim near a lifeguard, NEVER ALONE.

·         Parents & child caregivers should know how to perform rescue techniques and strategies to respond in an emergency.

·         Bring a phone with you to the pool to call 911 in case of an emergency.

·         Keep reaching & throwing aids near the swimming pool (i.e. life preservers, shepherd’s hook)
